Virtual Threads vs async/await

Two answers to the same problem: a thread per request is expensive, so stop blocking an OS thread.

The problem both solve. A blocking call parks an OS thread. OS threads cost ~1MB of stack and a kernel scheduling slot, so a thread-per-request server tops out in the low thousands. Most of those threads are doing nothing but waiting on I/O.

async/await (stackless). The compiler rewrites your function into a state machine; await is a suspension point. Cheap and explicit, but it colours your functions: an async function can only be awaited by another async function, so the asyncness propagates up the entire call graph, and every library needs an async twin. Rust, JavaScript, C#, Python work this way.

Virtual threads (stackful). The runtime gives each task its own growable stack and unmounts it from the carrier thread when it blocks. Existing blocking code just works — no colouring, real stack traces, thread-locals and debuggers behave. Java 21+, Go's goroutines, Erlang's processes work this way. The cost is runtime complexity and, for Java, a long tail of pinning problems: a synchronized block or a native call pins the virtual thread to its carrier and you lose the benefit.

What neither fixes. Concurrency limits. Cheap tasks make it easy to start ten thousand database queries, and your pool has twenty connections. You still need a semaphore, a bounded pool, and backpressure — the bottleneck simply moved somewhere less visible.

Takeaway. Stackless is explicit and viral; stackful is transparent and magic. The interesting question in both is where you put the limit.

My first blog post for Antithesis is now up! It's called Why Antithesis and is a 2000 word overview on the relative merits of Deterministic Simulation Testing as compared to Formal Methods (tldr there's an essential tradeoff between input coverage and code fidelity). Check it out ! Also: last year I did a charity drive for the Greater Chicago Food Depository . It was successful enough that I want

Introducing Adaptive Dark Mode

We’re excited to announce Adaptive Dark Mode in Safari 27.3 beta. When enabled by a user, Safari adapts light websites and presents them as dark. In the spring of 2019, Safari 12.1 became the first browser to support dark mode on the web. A lot of people love using dark mode, but not every website has a dark version. Almost 40% of web page loads are from users in dark mode, and yet only 10% of pag

Why did you choose the nix you nix?

I don't which nix is good and at this point I'm afraid I need to ask. - (Cpp)[Nix](https://nixos.org/) - [Determinate Nix](https://determinate.systems/) - [Lix](https://lix.systems/) Or, you know, [Guix](https://guix.gnu.org/)? OpenAI seems to be silently re-enabling model training on Codex chats

My company is pretty paranoid about leaking IP to the frontier labs through prompts, so we've all been diligent about disabling data sharing in Codex/Claude Code/etc. But yesterday my coworkers and I noticed that the setting had been silently reenabled in Codex. None of us knowingly opted back in. You can check your settings here: https://chatgpt.com/settings/dat

Yesterday's hot paper was Sparks of Weight-Space Programming: LLMs can natively read & write neural network weights by Rikiya Takehi, Jayden Teoh, Alex Zhang, and Omar Khattab. The paper (OK, the authors classify is as a "blog post", but it's paper-shaped) found that frontier models, in particular GPT-6 Astra, can both interpret and modify the raw weights of a machine learning model - literally a

Facebook Feature Framework (F3) is Meta’s framework for authoring, compiling, and serving the machine learning features underlying ads ranking models, where a single request can require more than 20,000 features. We first presented F3 at AI @ Scale 2020 . F3 reduced execution computational costs by compiling all features into a single merged graph, but that graph also served as the release u

Noisy Issues, Noisy Results: Mislabeling in Information Retrieval-based Bug Localization

Information Retrieval-based Bug Localization (IRBL) leverages bug reports to identify faulty source files. Evaluations of IRBL approaches primarily rely on labeled issues from issue tracking systems. However, prior research has shown that issue labels are frequently incorrect in open-source projects, threatening the validity of IRBL evaluations. Existing studies have primarily examined traditional
