Index Selectivity

An index helps only when it eliminates most of the table.

The mechanism. Selectivity is the fraction of rows a predicate keeps. An index lookup costs a tree descent plus, for a non-covering index, one random read per matching row to fetch the rest of the row. A sequential scan reads every page but does so sequentially. Past roughly 5–10% of the table, the random reads lose and the planner switches to a scan. This is why your index on status (three distinct values) is never used, and why you concluded "the planner is broken".

Composite index order. With an index on (a, b), a query on a alone works, a query on b alone does not. The rule is leftmost prefix. Put equality columns first, then the range column, then columns you only need for output. A sort can also be served by the index if its order matches ORDER BY.

Covering indexes. If the index contains every column the query touches (INCLUDE in PostgreSQL, a secondary index with the columns in MySQL), the heap fetch disappears and the random-read cost goes away. That can move the crossover point substantially.

What to actually do. Read EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS). Compare the planner's row estimate with the real count. A 100x misestimate means stale statistics, a correlated predicate the planner assumes is independent, or a function wrapping the column so the index cannot be used at all.

Takeaway. Indexes are not a performance setting you turn on. Each one is a bet about selectivity, and you can read whether the bet paid off.

Notes on the complex roots of unity

One of the most wonderful aspects of math is how deep we can get by studying seemingly trivial questions. Consider the roots of unity, where "unity" simply means the number 1. Basics: roots of unity for real numbers Studying the roots of unity usually begins in middle school: what is …

Linux 7.3 Released With Faster I/O Performance, AMD Zen 6 Preparations & More

The Linux 7.3 kernel is out today for an on-time release of this next stable kernel version...

The 7.3 kernel has been released

Linus Torvalds has released the 7.3 kernel, as expected. It's Sunday afternoon, and this week I somehow kept my wits together long enough to keep track of the day of the week, so the release isn't randomly delayed. Will wonders never cease? Anyway, nothing very special seems to have happened this last week, so as expected the final 7.3 is out, and thus tomorrow the merge window for 7.4 opens. Exce

It's enough - vibecoding tag crossed from useless to harmful

The vibecoding tag has been getting more and more useless for a while now. It lost the original meaning as the culture of software engineering with LLMs matured a bit. It got silly when posts talking about LLMs in general got tagged. It got useless when posts even mentioning some project created with LLMs in passing got tagged. Now it actually got harmful to the community when tagging posts turns

AWS Introduces Preview of Well-Architected Agent

AWS recently announced the preview of the Well-Architected Agent, a service that analyzes environments against Well-Architected best practices and provides prioritized recommendations across cost, security, performance, and reliability. The AI agent can also suggest remediation steps and review infrastructure-as-code before deployment. By Renato Losio
