Exponential Backoff with Jitter

Retries without jitter re-synchronise your clients into a self-inflicted DDoS.

The mechanism. On failure, wait base * 2^attempt before retrying, capped at some maximum, then add randomness. The exponential part gives an overloaded dependency room to recover. The random part — jitter — is the half everyone skips, and it is the half that matters.

Why jitter is not optional. A dependency blips and fails a thousand requests at once. Every client computes the same backoff and retries at the same instant. The dependency, still recovering, falls over again. The clients retry again, still in lockstep. You have built a retry storm, and it is periodic. Jitter spreads the herd out.

Which jitter. AWS measured the variants: full jitter (sleep = random(0, min(cap, base * 2^n))) wins on both completion time and total work in most cases. "Equal jitter" (half fixed, half random) is marginally more predictable. Decorrelated jitter is competitive. Plain exponential with no jitter is always worst.

The parts that are not the sleep. Only retry idempotent operations, or carry an idempotency key. Cap total attempts and total elapsed time, not just the interval. Never retry a 4xx — the request is wrong, and retrying it is pure load. Use a retry budget: a token bucket that caps retries at, say, 10% of normal traffic, so a widespread failure cannot multiply your load. And do not retry at every layer: three layers each retrying three times is twenty-seven requests.

Takeaway. retry(3) with no jitter, no budget and no idempotency is how a brief blip becomes an outage.

Security Update on PHP2Shell: Impact for Docker Customers

Summary On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Docker began tracking two critical vulnerabilities in PHP, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 , commonly known as PHP2Shell. The vulnerabilities allow attackers to execute code remotely in PHP core, and they affect PHP packages going back to version 5.4: the supported versions 8.2 through 8.5, and the end-of-life versions 5.x, 7.x, 8.0, and 8.1. Tell HN: I unknowingly broke the PHP RCE embargo. I am sorry.

I posted here about the then-upcoming PHP RCEs related to CVE-2026-109618 & CVE-2026-109619. I appreciate this has had considerable knock-on effects with the schedule for co-ordinated disclosure, and created additional workload. I am truly sorry. I take full responsibility for my actions. It was not remotely my intention to cause any of the subsequent side effects. At the time of posting, I didn&#

What is your opinion on submission quality since the `vibecoding` tag was removed?

Were concerns about its removal real, or has its absence moderated content to be higher quality? Were there any unexpected consequences? Is anyone willing to admit that their hope for its removal, or fear of its removal was misplaced? Is lobsters better or worse without it?

Building SQL Equivalence Proofs from Query Rewrite Rules

Query rewriting and semantic evaluation of text-to-SQL systems both depend on deciding whether two SQL queries return the same result on every database satisfying the schema constraints. Decades of equivalence-preserving optimizer rules provide a natural basis for constructive proofs: two queries are equivalent when admitted rewrites transform them to a common logical expression.
